About
Laura is a Boston-based community arts organizer, movement artist, and educator. With an ME.d. in Community Arts and a specialization in Environmental Arts, Kathrein uses dance and movement analysis as a way to develop better understanding and empathy for the natural world. Through her work as a community artist, Laura celebrates collaboration with various bodies, musicians, friends, strangers, and animals. Her main modalities of dance include various modern techniques and site-specific and contact improvisation. Laura entered the circus world in 2018 and continues her professional growth by taking her movement practice into the air. She both teaches and takes classes at Commonwealth Circus Center in Jamaica Plain, MA.
Outside of her movement practice, Laura has been a teacher of STEAM, environmental science, outdoor leadership, and arts-integrated curriculum for grades K-12. She has worked in various formal and informal educational settings, with a specific interest in after school and socio-emotional learning. In 2016, she co-founded WonderLab, a STEAM based lab school located at Lesley University. Currently, Laura is the Operations DIrector for a Brookline Public School afterschool program.
Laura is also a leader on the Board of Directors for Gallery 263 in Cambridge, MA. She joined the Gallery 263 board in 2017 and has served as both President and Co-President of the board since 2021. Above all else, Laura is dedicated to maintaining creative spaces, like Gallery 263, as she firmly believes they are not only vital to the city’s art scene but provide important social capital for the greater community.
